merous than fungi, these organisms used to be suppressed by acidifying the agar medium to pH 4 to 5, but this has been made unnecessary by the addition of rose bengal to suitable media (N. R. Smith and V. T. Dawson, Soil Sci. 58:467, 1944). Counts of fungi were even higher in media containing rose bengal than in acidified media (J. P. Martin, Soil Sci. 69:215, 1960). Actinomycetes grow more slowly than do most bacteria and fungi, and hence they are likely to be masked in culture plates of ordinary media. Since the actinomycetes, as a group, are capable of growing in media containing low nitrogen, this property is used to prevent the development of the

Powdered chitin agar as a selective medium for enumeration of actinomycetes in water and soil.

Agar media made with 0.4% colloidal chitin plus mineral salts and adjusted to pH 8.0 was superior to four other commonly used media for the isolation and enumeration of actinomycetes from water samples. More actinomycetes developed on chitin agar, and the development of bacteria and fungi was suppressed. Frozen and vacuum-dried chitin from aqueous colloidal suspensions was finely divided and ga...

Identification of Aspergillus Species Isolated from Corn and Peanuts in Storage Godowns

The aim of this study was to identify aflatoxin producing fungi from affected corn and peanut samples collected from the storage godowns. Fungi were isolated from corn and peanuts using potato dextrose agar and modified rose bengal agar. The pure culture of the isolates were grown on differential media namely malt extract agar, czapek yeast extract agar and czapek dox agar for species identific...

Comparative merits of eight popular media in aerometric studies of fungi.

Although cultural surveys of airborne fungi are pursued widely, the comparative virtues of popular media have not been systematically tested. To facilitate an informed choice, eight different agar media were compared using paired single-plate exposures of identical, wind-oriented, Andersen samplers. Modified Mehrlich's (MM), Sabouraud's dextrose (SAB), malt extract (MALT), V8 juice (V8), and po...

Isolation of antibacterial material-producing bacteria from saline soil

Saline soils are widely spread in Iran. These intact soils are a great source for the isolation of new bacteria with highly functional metabolites in biotechnology. Actinomycete strains were isolated on starch casein agar and ISP2 with different concentrations of sodium chloride (0, 5 and 10%) from treated soil samples. Pure colonies were cultured on a casein glycerol medium. After complete gro...

Possible use of rose bengal agar as differential medium for the isolation of bacteria in the family Rhizobiaceae.

The rose bengal agar developed by Smith and Dawson (Soil Sci., 58, 467-471, 1944) to count soil fungi has a number of advantages over the normal. acidified medium. In addition to having a neutral pH, the dye in the medium will confine the growth of the fungi, particularly those showingaerial and spreading growth. These authors note, however, that a few bacteria are tolerant of the rose bengal u...
